Electrician in La Motte-Picquet (Paris 15), from the Village Suisse to rue du Commerce

Our base is on rue Viala, near Dupleix. We walk to the La Motte-Picquet crossroads, for a flat, a shop or a gallery, and we know the buildings around here.

La Motte-Picquet is a crossroads first and foremost. Three metro lines meet here, the elevated metro has run overhead since 1906, and rue du Commerce starts at the foot of the station. Around it, stone and brick buildings, with shops at street level and flats above. For the rest of the arrondissement, see our electrician in Paris 15 page.

The flats around the crossroads

Many of the buildings here went up before electricity reached people's homes. The power was added afterwards, and the installations have been reworked several times since. So you find a bit of everything, sometimes in the same flat: a recent panel in the hallway, and wiring under timber moulding in a bedroom nobody has opened up since.

As a result, a fault doesn't always come from where you see it: circuits have been extended over the years, and a bedroom socket may depend on a box hidden in the corridor. We start by opening the panel and two or three junction boxes, to know what we're working on. If the installation needs more than a repair, our page on rewiring an old apartment explains how we go about it without damaging mouldings or parquet.

For everyday jobs, we do what a local electrician does: a socket that has given up, a breaker that keeps tripping, a switch to change, a socket to add behind the sofa. It's all on our electrical repair and adding a socket pages.

The Village Suisse and its galleries

Along avenue de Suffren, the Village Suisse brings together antique dealers and art galleries. Its name goes back to the 1900 World's Fair, when a Swiss village was recreated on the site.

In a gallery, the lighting is part of what you show. We choose LEDs that render colours faithfully (a colour rendering index of 90 or more) and don't heat the objects. Antique furniture and canvases don't take well to heat and ultraviolet, and old halogen spotlights gave them plenty of both. We fit the spots on tracks, so they can move when the hang changes.

For shop windows, the gallery's as well as those of the shops on rue du Commerce, we put in a separate circuit controlled by a time switch. The rules require windows to be switched off at night, and a properly set time switch means you never have to think about it. We can come before opening time or on a closing day, so we don't cut the power in front of your customers.

A word for antique dealers: we don't restore old lamps, we have no workshop for that. We do hang period chandeliers and wall lights, in a shop or at home, with a fixing suited to their weight. It's explained on our lighting installation page.

Can you work in a gallery outside opening hours?

Yes, and it's actually better: we switch circuits off during the work, so best not to do it in front of your customers. We book the visit before opening time or on a closing day.

No, we don't have a workshop to restore them. We do hang and connect old chandeliers and wall lights, with a fixing suited to their weight, in a shop or at home.
