Electrician in Malakoff: townhouses, converted workshops, new buildings

From our base on rue Viala, Malakoff is about ten minutes away through Vanves. It's a town we're fond of, because it has kept something of its working-class and market-garden past: streets of small houses, courtyards, old workshops — and a population of artists and craftspeople who have moved back into them. The workers' house and its three extensions

Malakoff's most common building is the interwar townhouse, in millstone or brick, on a narrow plot. It was fifty or sixty square metres originally; today it's often ninety, with a conservatory, a loft conversion and a garage turned into a bedroom or an office.

The trouble is that the electrical installation almost never kept pace with those extensions. You typically find an original panel — sometimes still on fuses — feeding circuits added one at a time, often spurred off an existing socket, with no dedicated protection and no residual-current device. Each extension hooked onto the previous one, and the day the conservatory trips the whole ground floor, nobody knows what runs where any more.

Our work in these houses therefore begins by rebuilding the real map of the installation, then putting each extension onto a clean circuit. The converted workshop: from industrial three-phase to a home

This is Malakoff's speciality. The town had many small workshops, warehouses and business premises at the back of courtyards, and some have become homes, lofts or artists' studios. These places have obvious charm — the height, the light, the glass roof — and an electrical installation designed for something else entirely.

You frequently find a three-phase supply sized for machinery, industrial sockets, track lighting, a panel oversized for domestic use, and none of the dedicated circuits a home expects. Turning a workshop installation into a residential one isn't simplifying it: it's rethinking it. You have to decide whether the three-phase supply is kept and balanced or whether to revert to single-phase, create the kitchen and bathroom circuits that never existed, treat the bathroom with its safety zones, and bring the whole thing to residential standard — through to a Consuel certificate when the installation is entirely redone.

For a workshop that stays a workshop — an artist, a craftsperson — the logic is reversed: we keep the power and make it safe, with protection suited to the machines actually in use.

The new buildings of the new districts

Around the town hall and along the main roads, Malakoff has also renewed itself with recent blocks. The electrics there are up to code and under warranty: we rarely come for repairs, and more often for what the basic installation doesn't provide — extra sockets, the lighting installation the developer left waiting on temporary lampholders, controlled lighting or shutters. These are short jobs, with no chasing, done in half a day.

Everyday work is the same as in all our towns: a breaker that keeps tripping, a dead socket, heating that won't come back on in autumn, a silent intercom.
